TURFGRASS SOD VARIETY DESCRIPTIONS
Celebration Bermudagrass Variety Description
Patented
Celebration Bermuda, introduced by Sod Solutions, Inc., is a selected mutation of Cynodon dactylon, a hybrid cultivar of Bermuda, chosen specifically for its dark blue-green color, low growing habit, adaptability to light to moderate shade, excellent drought tolerance and ability to reduce production costs while demonstrating desirable growth characteristics. It was developed in Australia and has proven its ability to thrive in hot, humid conditions in a variety of applications from home lawns to sports fields. Celebration has performed well in sandy and clay soil types with aggressive growth from its runners and rhizomes, but can be mowed with a standard rotary mower due to its broader leaf and open growth habit.
Empire Zoysia Variety Description
Patented
Empire Zoysia was discovered in Brazil, and unlike other Zoysia varieties, has proven its ability to thrive in hot, humid conditions. Because of its drought tolerance, Empire requires less water than most other grasses and is well suited to areas where water use is severely regulated. It also requires less fertilizer. Empire has performed well in sandy and clay soil types with aggressive growth from its runners and rhizomes, but can be mowed with a standard rotary mower due to its broader leaf and open growth habit. This versatile turfgrass thrives in agriculture zones 6B-11 and is being tested in zones 5 and 6 for cold hardiness extremes. Because of its dense growth habit, weeds are rarely a problem in healthy stands.
Kentucky Bluegrass Variety Description
Patented
Kentucky Bluegrass is a cool season perennial ground cover; forming a beautiful, high quality, dense sod when grown in pure stands. Grass color ranges from bright green to deep bluish green. Bluegrass is often used in low to medium traffic areas and often incorporated with other grass species to produce a better multi-purpose lawn. Bluegrasses can be planted from seeds or sodded and is one of the most popular turfgrass lawns in Northern America. Bluegrasses require medium amounts of lawn care and make beautiful home and sports grasses. Kentucky Bluegrass is often sold as a blend of similar improved varieties for greater versatility. This blend can result in improved lawn appearance, earlier green, with better disease and insect resistance. Bluegrass is one of the longest living perennial grasses grown.
Patriot Bermudagrass Variety Description
Patented
Patriot was developed by the Oklahoma State University Bermudagrass Breeding and Development Team. In the upper region of bermudagrass adaptation where cold winters are an issue, the overall quality of Patriot is usually equal to or better than that of Tifway. This low temperature-hardy variety establishes rapidly from sprigs and has improved resistance to spring dead spot. Excellent aerial shoot survival during winter, relatively short internodes and high shoot density may result in a need for routine de-thatching under intensive management. It combines superior cold tolerance, disease resistance, wear tolerance and leaf texture. Patriot is clearly the bermudagrass of the future for the Mid-Atlantic region.
Riviera Bermudagrass Variety Description
U. S. Protected Variety
Can be sold only as a class of Certified Seed
Riviera is a synthetic variety developed from three parental plants and released by the Oklahoma Agricultural Experiment Station with an exclusive license to Johnston Seed Company, Enid, OK. Riviera produces a moderately fine-textured, medium dark green turf with excellent turf quality. It appears to have adequate resistance or tolerance to the major pests of bermudagrass, particularly in the U.S. transition zone. It is sufficiently cold-hardy to be used in parts of the U. S. transition zone between warm-season and cool-season turfgrasses with minimal risk. Commercial plants of Riviera must be established by planting either certified seed or certified sod (or sprigs). Certified seed is synthetic one generation seed harvested from a field planted to approximately equal quantities of foundation (or breeder) sprigs of the three parental clones. Certified sod (or sprigs) must be produced from a field planted with foundation seed.
Sovereign Bermudagrass Variety Description
U. S. Variety Protection Applied For
Sovereign solves the dilemma when planting a warm season grass in the upper transition zone. It alleviates the concern regarding lack of cold tolerance. The thriving germplasm selected in Northern KY when breeding Sovereign ensures the utmost tolerance to the elements. The find texture and bright green color, and aggressive growth satisfy all turf managers. It has brilliant overall turf quality, excellent winter hardiness, superb drought tolerance, vigorous establishment from seed, and superlative wear tolerance. It is recommended for golf course tees, fairways, and roughs, Sovereign is also recommended for sports fields, parks, and utility fields, and lawns. Reduced water applications trim overall management cost.
Tifway (419) Bermudagrass Variety Description
Patented
Tifway (419) was selected and cooperatively tested by the USDA, the Georgia Coastal Plain Experiment Station, and the U.S. and Southern Golf Associations. Found in a seed lot of African bermudagrasses from Johannesburg, South Africa, in the Spring of 1954, this chance hybrid between African and common bermudagrass will shed no pollen and set no seed. The dark-green, disease-resistant variety spreads quickly, and is more resistant to sod webworm. Tifway was released to growers of certified sprigs in 1960.
