Merle is 2 to 5 days later than the earliest heading cultivar, Jamestown. Average plant height of Merl is 33.5 inches, which is 2 inches taller than Jamestown. Straw strength in Virginia is very good and in the eastern SRW region average lodging scores were better than those of Roane. In Virginia, Merl had a three year (2006-2008) average grain yield of 92 bu./ac that was similar to that of the highest yield cultivar, Shirley. Merl had an average test weight of 60.3 lb./bu. and produced test weights significantly above the test averages in three out of four years. Roane is a full-season, high yielding, awnletted soft red winter wheat released by the Virginia Agricultural Experiment Station. Roane exhibits a stable and high level of performance, broad adaptation, and has an exceptionally high test weight and resistance/tolerance to a broad spectrum of plant pathogens and insect pests. Roane is unique in that it possesses a type of inhibition to either aphid feeding or infection by barley yellow dwarf virus. Roane’s resistance to the prevalent field populations of powdery mildew has broken down in Virginia, but continues to be resistant in some other areas. It is susceptible to stem rust, intermediately resistant to soil borne Mosaic, Wheat Spindle Streak Mosaic viruses, and to leaf and glume blotch. Sisson is a high yielding, moderately early heading, short stature, awnletted, soft red winter wheat released in March 2000 by the Virginia Agricultural Experiment Station. It is best adapted for production in the mid-Atlantic and northeastern regions of the U.S., but also has performed well in the southern corn belt. Plant height of Sisson is 35 inches. Straw strength of Sisson is similar to Coker 9835 and better than Jackson. Winter survival is moderately good. Grain yields have been similar to or exceeded those of the best check cultivars, averaging 87 bushels per acre. Test weight of Sisson is above average. Sisson is resistant/ moderately resistant to prevalent field populations of powdery mildew and moderately resistant/moderately susceptible to leaf rust depending on the prevalence of specific races. It is resistant to the predominant race, TPMK, of stem rust, and is moderately resistant to barley yellow dwarf virus and glume blotch. It has moderate resistance to Wheat Spindle Streak Mosaic virus. It is susceptible to Hessian fly. Sisson was released as a limited generation variety; there will be no Registered class of seed.
